WARS and RUMORS of WARS: SCS No. 32

Sunday, January 4, 2015, Stoney Creek Sermonette: Number 32

(We at Project Dream Again hope these sermonettes bring some measure of peace to your soul and maybe spark a thought you then share with someone else in your life.)

Scripture for Today:

Mark 13:1-8 New International Version (NIV)
1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”
5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

Sermon for Today:

I would encourage you to read the entire 13th chapter of Gospel of Mark or the 24th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in order to get the whole picture that Jesus paints of what is to come.  Let me quickly point out He says no one knows when it is coming, but the picture is not pretty.

Why would I start with such a message as this?  Because we have some of our young people in harm’s way and people are not paying attention.  If you voted for the man in the White House in 2008, then you know he promised to end these wars.  I refuse to call them conflicts or some other silly name.  People are dying in a number of places on this planet and we have troops in war zones in a number of those places.  I know Jesus said there would be war and rumors of war, but do we have to be the country bringing His prophecy into reality or could we be part of the peacemakers He also taught about?

The country is not as concerned about our troops and what they are doing as they were back when I was in and there was a draft.  Everyone had skin in the game.  Today only the volunteers in the military and their families have much skin in this game.

I wish I could start this year by saying I think it will get better.  I don’t.  It will only get better when God decides to end it all and as I said no one and I mean no one knows when that will be.

Prayer for Today:

Father, May the world find the peace that Your Son came into the world to bring.  It is in His name I pray. Amen.
